I am determined to get some holiday crafts finished in time to enjoy them at Christmas this year. I always have big ideas and end up spending the time leading up to the holidays running around and searching for presents or getting caught up in the general hustle and bustle that the holidays bring. Last year I was literally monogramming Christmas gifts at 2:30 in the morning on December 23. Not this year, friends.
All of that to say that while I was working last night I was doing a little multi-tasking to create a Christmas ornament wreath. I’ve seen them pinned everywhere and a friend of mine recently made one. I asked her about it and she said, “it was so easy I just covered a straw wreath with felt and hot glued ornaments to the wreath.” And so with a straw wreath, some felt, the hot glue gun and a ton of ornaments I set out to make the wreath.
I started with a straw wreath. They are sturdy, but still light weight so they make the perfect base for a wreath that’s going to have some weight to it. The straw is messy and thankfully the first step is to cover the wreath in felt. I bought 1/2 yard of felt and cut it into strips, wrapped it tightly around the wreath and secured it with plenty of hot glue.
Then start gluing the ornaments onto the wreath. You’ll want to start with the largest ornaments and then use the smaller ornaments as a filler. I wanted the base to be a solid silver and the smaller ornaments to be colored. You could certainly do a mixture of colors as well.
Continue working your way around the wreath. It takes A LOT of ornaments.
At this point I realized I needed to add something to hang the wreath so I opted for grosgrain ribbon. I probably used a stick of hot glue on that one piece of ribbon. Don’t be afraid of the hot glue, you can clean it up later.
After I filled the whole wreath with the large silver ornaments I went back and started filling in the holes between the ornaments with smaller green and red ornaments.
I decided it needed a little something extra so I hemmed the edges of a scrap piece of silk and embroidered it with a “G” to make a sash. I absolutely love the way it turned out. Such a fun little project.
Other Info:
Original pin can be found here.
I used an 18″ straw wreath and two containers of shatterproof silver ornaments from Hobby Lobby.
I also used one container each of small red and green ornaments.
