One of my more lofty goals for this holiday season was to make a ruffled tree skirt. I saw them on Pinterest and fell in love but time was my main issue. Well, my sweet mother and grandmother came over yesterday and we set out to make the tree skirt.
I’ve seen the “no sew” version and to be honest, it looked much harder to me. I thought I could just use the serger to put a rolled hem on the edges and then change the settings to ruffle the other side of the strips of fabric. It actually worked perfect using the serger.
Let’s start at the beginning:
(This is the quick version of how I cut the canvas for the base of the tree skirt, this tutorial has more detailed .)
- Fold a 4 1/2′ by 4 1/2′ piece of canvas (or other sturdy material) into quarters.
- Fold it corner over corner to form a triangle.
- Cut a semi-circle into the edge of the fabric. It will look like a good bit of fabric is being wasted but it’s necessary to make the circle.
- Cut a small quarter circle from the point of the triangle.
- Open the canvas up and cut along one side of the fabric starting at the radius. (This is to have an opening in the tree skirt for when you put it around the tree.)
Then I used the ruffle setting for the other side of the fabric. Have I told you how much I love this thing?
I started several inches up on the canvas, just make sure the ruffle will hang over the edge. Using hot glue attach the ruffled fabric to the canvas base.
Keep going until you have made a complete circle.
Then on to the next color. Once again I don’t have specifics on the measurements. I was mainly trying to make sure I left enough space so that it would show the ruffle underneath.
Repeat until you get to the center.
At the center I hot glued a piece of grosgrain ribbon to cover the ruffled edge of the fabric.
You know I couldn’t resist putting it beneath the tree immediately, right?
Now I think BK needs a tiny pink ruffled tree skirt for her tree ๐
