I couldn’t think of a better way to answer your questions about my daily routine or how I fit things into the day, than a day in the life post. It’s been months since I’ve written one of these, so I thought this would be a great time. The school year is winding down, only about 9 days left, and I am officially counting down the days until summer break. Here’s what a typical day looks like:
4:00- Alarm goes off. I’ve been getting up this early since Blissdom and I never like it, I thought I might magically turn into a morning person. No, doesn’t work that way (or it hasn’t yet). I made my way to the computer to blog at about 4:20, cup of coffee in hand, and wrote. Ideally, I’d like to be a few days ahead, but right now I’m writing the post for the day. I make a juice for breakfast, 4 carrots, 1 apple, 1 cup spinach leaves, read Jesus Calling, put dinner in the crock-pot and make a grocery list.
5:50- I start to get ready and I’m out the door at 6:55, headed to school. BK is still sleeping when I leave.
7:25- My day starts at school. The year is coming to a close, so our schedule isn’t typical. After reading block, I test for report cards, teach a lesson on three-dimensional shapes, start a writing workshop, practice for kindergarten graduation (twice). I had half of this Naked Protein Juice Smoothie for lunch. I’m in my car by 3:32, since I have to stop by the grocery store. Sunday is typically grocery shopping day, but it was Mother’s Day, so I had to make my usual Publix run after school.
4:30- I’m home from the grocery store. Our neighbor is here playing with Braylen, they are getting along great and continue to play while I quickly put away the groceries. Then, of course, I change clothes. My work clothes last all of 20 minutes in the evenings. My hair usually goes straight in a ponytail and I’ve laid claim to Allen’s Polo tees, they are the softest shirts ever. Those Lululemon Groove pants call my name and I can’t resist the comfort. Every single day, I end up like this. I’m sure my husband is thrilled with my wardrobe choices. Actually, he couldn’t care less, I think he just wants his shirts back.
5:00’ish- We head outside to play. Allen worked in the yard all evening. Between the playhouse and whatever it is that he is doing to our yard, he stayed busy. (He’s really making our back yard a little bigger by clearing off a little more land that is grown up with underbrush and weeds, it just looks like a big mess at the present.) Lately, he’s been working on BK’s play-set, but since he had the equipment today, he worked on a different project. BK and I hung out outside, drew with sidewalk chalk and played on her swing-set, then I suggested going in to play because I needed to put away a little laundry.
6:05- We played upstairs in the playroom and she wanted to put together a leggo set, then play dress-up. When I came down to finish dinner, she found these two limes and said, “Mom, I found two wuacamole’s, you want the one with a sticker or the one with no sticker.”
6:40- I finish prepping dinner and put away the laundry. Confession: My sweet nanny usually leaves my laundry looking like that picture below, I just come home and put it away. It is such a huge time saver, she’s always doing little things around the house that help me in a big way. We ate dinner on the back deck, the roast from earlier with brown rice and roasted carrots.
7:30- Bathtime and bedtime. BK picked out those three books to read before bedtime. Even though she knows every word to Goodnight Moon, she usually chooses it a few times each week. Allen and I usually switch up the nightly duties. If I give her a bath, he’ll clean the kitchen or the other way around. The kitchen is the room in the house that has to be cleaned, daily. A clean sink is basically a non-negotiable.
8:30 After Braylen was settled in bed, I did a quick ab workout (250 total resps, a mixture of crunches, jack-knife sit-ups, leg raises, scissor kicks, bicycles), and a 2 minute plank and wall sit. I picked out Braylen’s clothes for the next day and read a little before getting in bed around 9:45.

I feel ya sister. My day looks very similar minus the getting up with the roosters to blog. That’s not going to happen over here. HA! At least you get off work early and home at a decent hour. That’s a blessing. I don’t get home till 5:30 or 6 most nights so I miss out on the playing. I’m really having a hard time with that right now. The feeling of missing out on so much. Is it really worth it? I ask myself that DAILY. It’s so hard. But, we do what we gotta do. Somehow. At least you have summer to look forward too right around the corner!

wow. I admire the fact that you get up that early. I am lucky if I get up by 6:45. LOL

I don’t know how you do it getting up at 4:00. My schedule mimics yours except I don’t get up until 5:45. At 9:45 my eyes are slamming shut. Here’s a nosy question – Do you have a nanny that keeps BK or is your nanny your Grandma?

I love these kind of posts!
– 4:00AM is so early, but maybe I should try it sometime. I am pleased if I can get up around 6. If I wake up when my kids do, I just feel so behind!
– I would love to hear more about your diet. You seem like you really stick with eating right. I would be starving if I basically had juice/smoothie for breakfast and lunch.
Love your blog!

Thank you!
I’m not following a specific diet, I just try to balance things out, if I know I’m eating a big dinner, then I’ll skimp on lunch, etc. I don’t deprive myself of anything, but try to moderate everything ๐

WOW! It’s pushing it some days for me to get out of bed by 5:00. There is NO way I could do 4:00. I did a series of posts like this a while back for a whole week, and people were in awe at what it’s like to work full time and take care of a family. You do a great job balancing!! I know you’ll enjoy your summer break!!! ๐

Girl I don’t know how you get up so early! I have been in a rut though the past week and haven’t worked out a bit, I blame it on the interviewing/moving soon stress. 7 more days and I can be on my happy little workout schedule all I want:)

Wow! Thanks for sharing that! I love that you’re disciplined in a positive way with your daily routine, you do something that obviously works for you and your family. I LOVE that you start your day off with “Jesus Calling”, hence the reason you’re able to do what is you do. I love how He strengthens and energizes us for our unique day-to-day. I have four boys under the age of 7, my aim is to get up early (possibly not 4am, but early enough for “Me” time, like exercise, prayer and a rare time of a quiet house!)
God bless, and I pray you have a wonderful summer holiday! ๐

Thanks Anna! Once summer break comes, I won’t get up near as early ๐

When I read the numbers “4:00” I seriously wanted to weep. That hurts my heart, girl.

Thanks for sharing your day. Our regular days as a teacher are very similar in time. Of course when I saw 4 am, I could not believe it. You definitely are an early riser ๐ I hope one day to get up a little earlier to get things done, one day hopefully ๐

Shew!!! I thought I was busy with being a SAHM, taking care of 3 wild kiddos, being pregnant and somehow managing to keep the laundry caught up…. you definitely have me beat. You are super woman. ๐
I admire your organization and drive.
Anna says
You are wonder woman! How do you get up at 4? I get up about 6 and then I rush trying to fit in a workout and get ready before everyone’s up. You’ve inspired me to try to get up earlier. I don’t usually get home until 5:45, so I don’t want to do things like run at night and miss playtime, so I squeeze it in before work or at lunch which leaves me feeling frazzled (and hopefully not looking that way!).

This was fun to read, I too rush to the wearing of sleek black yoga pants and T-shirt. ๐
